R.I.P. The Daily Jolt

After ten years of serving the community, The Daily Jolt is passing the torch to a group that has built a similar site to support the college experience.

Another group of students from the Amherst region have created a similar site called CampusLive.  You can find your school at www.campuslive.com.  We know that you can use this site to connect, share, find food, and procrastinate as you have for years on The Daily Jolt.

Please let the CampusLive team know what you think about their site and what you would want to see to support your needs as a community.  They are a good group of young, ambitious recent college graduates looking to provide the best campus homepage.

It has been a great run and we appreciate what you have done to push colleges to recognize the value of supporting the campus community over these past 10 years!

We have a had a lot of fun, enjoyed your banter, and enjoyed your support!

Sincerely,

The Daily Jolt

P.S. Please feel free to leave your well wishes and comments about the legacy of The Daily Jolt by clicking “Response” above!

  1. Thank you to Amit, Mike, Seth, Chris (for carrying the ball for many years), Kendra, Ron, Steve, Sarah, Jamie, Scott and Max. The Jolt is dead long live the Jolt Spirit

    • wow, I cannot believe this site is dead….can anyone share with an alum what happened?

I found the campusLIVE site here:
      http://www.campuslive.com/brown

It doesn’t seem to really compare….

      • At lease we caught the end of its heyday. Definitely something I will associate with Brown though.

      • *least. Goddammit.

  2. good thing my school even has one of those campuslive pages….

  3. If anyone is unable to find their school on CampusLIVE, please let us know – http://www.campuslive.com/info/contact . We will make sure it’s launched quickly.

As for differences between DailyJolt and CampusLIVE, we realize we do not provide identical features, however we have shared the same goal: To create a local resource for college students that makes their lives easier.

We built all of our features based on requests from our users, so don’t fret if you can’t find something that was on DailyJolt. We’ll make it happen asap.

Thanks for giving us a try.

    • Jared — Campus Live NEEDs a marketplace ASAP.

    • hey jare jare, can you bring back the jolt? because that was on the daily jolt and i cant find it anywhere at this campus live thing. please, thanks.

  4. So sad, it was so dependable!!!

  5. you need a forum on campuslive

  6. Wow.

I remember, and worked on, The Blockprint — upstairs over the SAO office in the back of the Bank Building.

The torch gets passed — technology changes — causing many of the truly creative careers to die as well. Of course back then (under President John Frasier) RISD only cost $900 a year to attend.

    R.I.P.

  7. Man, that’s a shame. I knew it was coming for a while, but I’m sorry to see it go.

The Jolt is still one of the most well-designed forums I’ve ever seen. Most of the forums out there tend to be tangled messes of links and features – the Jolt was clean, easy to use, and attractive. Back around the time I was working on the Trinity one, students used it as obsessively as they use Facebook today. I met some of the most interesting people I know on that forum, usually around three in the morning. It was the kind of place that encouraged discussion of pretty much anything.

I hope CampusLIVE works out. I’d love to see schools have some kind of forum community again.

  8. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa toooooooo bad.

  9. Is there any way to access the archives? I emailed myself some links that are now all dead. help????

  10. how unfortunate!

    i’m leaving.

    *Shaed

  11. Sell outs! campus whatever sucks!

    • totally agree with you. its like one big soulless TV ad for crap. are the days when forums with character (like the jolt) are dead and gone? so sad to see what next geners have to “look forward” to 😦

  12. I’m always the last to know. Thanks to someone’s aim update…thank you to all for the work you kids did to keep me entertained! Good luck to all as you move forward!
Where am I to get my Doogie updates now? How many kids does kid_a have? When is mountain day?
    *weeps*

    • oh Colinas!

      *hu hu hu*

      remember the mu!

      • Classic post below by one of those colleges where the world is made just for them! Not that it isn’t mostly:)
I imagine the mu is also dead? How’s the tea/cat?
Oh my, were you the poet? muhaha

Where are they now? Grad school? Love and marriage? Long live the Jolt!

    • i’m an old man now!

      a poet? i don’t think so…

but how about a limerick? i wrote it just for you:

the Jolt was the favorite haunt
of a Mike Bibby fan from Vermont
      but when the Jolt died
      she laughed and she cried
having lost all the kids she could taunt.

      love, Lampy

    • evilslickbob! you probably wont remember me. i was skinless ratz on the smith jolt back in 2003 – 2006.

  13. Richard where are you ?

  14. This little beauty was very good to me in my day–especially in the aftermath of 9/11. But I think the shiniest Smithies, alums, and college boards always decide to pioneer new works when the time feels right. Examples: Smith Poetry Center, Engineering School, Campus Center, renewed Museum, putting up with Sonic Youth.

Suggestion for unofficial Smith song of the moment: “It’s your Thing” by the Isley Brothers???

xxxxxxx To all the Smithies, here and gone, and to all the ancestors, whether they walked on two legs or four.

Oh, P.S. I once heard the most charming rumor about Smith inventiveness in the mid-2000s: That the board or party committee or admissions people had decided to stack the deck at the Immorality house by placing NASA interns, early risers, potential Fulbrighters etc. in as firsties. They promptly used their impressive skills to make the case for the party’s survival.

  15. Oh, ok, I gush, but Hadley is an excellent town. One of my favorite Smithies (was on the comedy team) came from right around NoHo.

  16. As a former “Jolt Fairy,” I mourn the death of the Jolt. Thanks for everything you did and put out there!

  17. Was there technology made specifically for Daily Jolt that you would now want to sell? I’m thinking about the forums, the flier board, etc.

  18. As a former Daily Jolt fairy, I will miss this site. God, I have witnessed so much drama, great advice, and cool people in my 1.5 years moderating the Smith Daily Jolt that it helped me realize that a new media career is possible. Going to miss everything. But the memories will stay alive. Time to move on. Thanks everyone!

    Christina ’09.

  19. As a former Jolt employee, I am sad to see it go.
Dear EvilSlickBob – I hope you find some place to go.

    Peace,
    Aaron

so much better than campus live. and it’s a forum.

  21. I used to use this site all the time in the beginning of my time at Brown back in 2003 The forums were great and it had all the games and info I needed to get me through long days. I know the forum hasn’t been what it used to be for years, but it’s still sad to see the DJ go. It makes me feel old!!

  22. Very sad to see it go. I’ve been an infrequent visitor for almost 6 years now. Though I’m down here in north Florida, I lived vicariously through everyone attending school up north by reading random boards. One of my favorite pasttimes was reading restaurant reviews; the wit and blunt truths that people shared always left me in a nostalgic mood. I miss those days of searching for the greasiest food joint at 1 AM, especially when it’s someone else describing how wretched the place is. Man, I’m going to miss this site.

Thank you everyone who made The Daily Jolt possible. It’s been a fun ride.

  23. So sad, so sad. On a rainy day when I am trying to procrastinate at work and I pop on to see what’s going on in the area for a visit. THIS is what I find…such a sad time.

Seriously, your site was wonderful! I used it all the time when I was in school, and often after.

  24. Well, I guess I finally know what happened… sort of. I started learning web development a few years ago and I was very inspired by some of the Daily Jolt sites in my own education work. Wow, its a shame to see it gone but I will try to do my part of keeping the spirit alive and if you want an open place to bookmark your college & education links you can check out my site.

  26. Awwww nuts. The Jolt really was an important resource and an integral part of my campus experience at Brown. Future generations will not know what they missed out on- it provided something totally different from what Facebook provides. It was a supplemental offering and it is sad that the two cannot co-exist. R.I.P. Daily Jolt- you will be remembered.
(Wow, and I am now officially OLD).

  27. r.i.p.

  28. Long Live Ron Ayers!!! Clarkson Daily Jolt lives forever! Where will the Professor Deathmatch be held this year? FELLAND IS LORD – KMartShopper.

  29. R.I.P. Dailyjolt. Is there any way to get photos from the old site that were perhaps archived?

  30. use a machete

    • wow! I remembered so many posts with that phrase. Alas what will the college world be without the Jolt. Had some good times up late at night at Brown debating and joking on the Jolt.

      • In my pants

  31. what happened to everything on the daily jolt
    mainly all those pictures????
just curious. i was a jolt user when i was in college…like several years ago.

  34. I am indeed very sad to see the dailyjolt go. I especially enjoyed the politics forum where I learned a great deal from many people with extremely diverse views. I don’t think there are any good subsitutes for cross-campus discussions these days.

Thank you for all your detailed and informative posts – TBK, VGN (Maddox), VGS, Scio, TickledPink, KK, Paladin, PLF, and everyone else. While the forum was not always civil, discussions were typically passionate and often well-reasoned. Also, there was a decent representation of divergent viewpoints, something I find lacking these days as most current forums tend to be hyper-partisan.

I am currently an Asst. Prof. of Economics at Davidson College (in North Carolina, close to Charlotte) and if any of you jolters are in the area, I’d LOVE to meet up – not just to reminisce and reconnect, but also to find out how our views have evolved since those jolt days. I will be delighted if you get back in touch – gmail is probably the best way to reach me where my id is:

    shyamgs

Hope you’re all doing well despite the economy!

P.S. How can I make a parting comment about the jolt without a specific mention of ESB? I hope you’re well to, wherever you are!

  35. there are many used books sale in our area and i frequently visit them to buy some “

  36. I miss the daily jolt. I saved the Brown Daily Jolt’s Last Call list of things to do before you graduate if anyone wants it. I feel like it should get passed on somehow . . .

    • If you could post the list that would be awesome!!!

    • yes, please post the last call list of things to do before you graduate brown!

    • please post!!

  37. So sad to randomly check in and see it gone. Will miss the photos and memories of our jolt and all the forum bickering. We all die sometime. RIP jolt. Thanks to all wig worked to make it succesful: Amit, Kendra, Chris… it was a pleasure working with you all those years ago.

  38. CORN MAN!!!

  39. Oh the college days…RIP jolt!

  40. What i do not understood is actually how you’re now not really a lot more neatly-appreciated than you may be now. You are so intelligent. You recognize therefore significantly in relation to this topic, made me individually believe it from so many varied angles. you have a huge readers’ base already!

  50. This could have been Facebook if the people behind it had any skills, they were definately earlier to the game. Hope they all found their billions elsewhere.

BTW, Campus Live is dead now too. Guess those guys weren’t so great either.

  53. Furthermore, i believe that mesothelioma cancer is a uncommon form of most cancers that is usually found in those previously subjected to asbestos. Cancerous cells form while in the mesothelium, which is a safety lining which covers the vast majority of body’s body organs. These cells usually form inside the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or the sac which encircles the heart. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
